1. Regional Institutional Accreditation (The Non-Negotiable Standard)
Never enroll in an unaccredited institution. Legitimate U.S. institutions hold institutional accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), such as SACSCOC, NECHE, HLC, MSCHE, or NWCCU. Form I-20s from regionally accredited institutions carry the highest credibility with consular officers in Islamabad and Karachi.
2. Balancing Tuition Costs and Living Expenses by State
Tuition varies significantly across institutions: private universities often charge $35,000 to $60,000 annually, while accredited public state universities in the Midwest, South, and Texas offer tuition between $12,000 and $22,000.
Living costs also differ dramatically: living in metropolitan areas like New York or California costs $16,000 to $22,000 annually, whereas Midwestern and Southern university towns (e.g. Ohio, Georgia, Kansas, Illinois) cost $8,000 to $12,000 per year.
3. Matching CIP Codes for STEM OPT Eligibility
If you intend to work lawfully in the U.S. for up to 3 years after graduation, verify the program’s Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code. Programs in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, Biotechnology, and Engineering qualify for the 24-month STEM extension, providing a total of 36 months of lawful work.
